Welcome, Trumansburg Central School

TRUMANSBURG, March 26 -- We're branching out this spring, incorporating news and, when possible, photos from sports activities at Trumansburg Central School and Bradford Central School, both of which have parts of their districts in Schuyler County.

A visit by the editor to Trumansburg on its Photo Day resulted in photos of the tennis, golf, baseball, softball, girls track and boys track varsity squads, which are presented below. We also have on file head shots of the tennis, golf, baseball and softball players, for possible use later.

If there is anyone in the Trumansburg district who attends sporting events and takes pictures at them, you might consider e-mailing them along to The Odessa File. We're looking for photos that are clear, not taken at too great a distance, and which tell a story. If we decide to run yours, we can give photo credit, which should get people talking about you.

In the meantime, we welcome the Trumansburg athletes. More than 130 of them are taking part in spring sports. We don't know all of their names yet, but with the help of coaches, we've managed identification of the members of four teams. We don't have names yet on the track squads.

Baseball essay: Out of the Mist of Lore

Ray Dandridge is in the Baseball Hall of Fame -- one of its more obscure members. Herewith a look at the man. Lore.

A childhood hero

Bubba Phillips was a journeyman major league baseball player in the 1950s and 1960s -- not normally the stuff of hero worship. But he was hero to the writer of this story -- and friend. Bubba.

A night of beauty

This is a story about an unusual -- and quite beautiful -- visit to Cooperstown in the dead of winter. It's titled "Holy Night." Holy.

A childhood tale: "Damn Yankees"

Here's a little writing exercise about a childhood sports memory -- the day the Little League team for which I pitched, the Tigers, lost to the hated Yankees. Yankees.
