(Photo by Liz Fraboni) A final farewell to a Classic WATKINS GLEN, May 10 -- The five-year-old Twisted Classic track invitational at Watkins Glen High School had its last hurrah Friday, and it was an event blessed with unexpected sunny weather. With dire predictions two days earlier of a rainy, miserable Friday ahead, the day cleared, bringing with it a fittingly bright and fun-filled tournament to mark the departure from high school track coaching at the end of this season of WGHS's Marie Fitzsimmons. And with it will go the Twisted Classic, which Fitzsimmons said was "fun, but I think five years is a good run."
The boys team (pictured at right) of (from left) Jared Lewis, Carter Flahive, Jon Fazzary and Ben Quigley broke the 6400 Relay mark set in 2006 by Fazzary and then-running mates Steven Combs, Jacob Roth and Aaron Thomson. This year's crew posted a 20:12.4, beating the old mark of 20:17.5 -- but still finishing second in the race to Newark Valley's 20:04.7.
In the honored tradition of the Twisted Classic, everything was done as a team event -- with Field competitors pairing in teams of two from each school. Accordingly, Notre Dame's Olivia Weeks set a meet record in the Triple Jump, but shared the honor of victory in that event with a Notre Dame teammate. Trumansburg ran away with both team titles, the boys outpacing their nearest competitor, Newark Valley, by a 95.0 to 56.5 margin, and the girls outdistancing Newark Valley 93.0 to 63.5. Watkins Glen's boys placed 5th and its girls 4th. Odessa-Montour's boys were 7th and its girls tied for 5th. The most notable O-M performance came from Michele Kenney, who was part of O-M's three winning performances: the Shuttle Hurdles (with Ashley Bryington, Samantha Davis and Ariel Naylor), the Long Jump (with Brooke Gardner) and the Pole Vault (with Davis). Those first-place finishes earned the team 24 of its 37.5 points. On the boys' side, O-M's Brendan Letteer and Jesse Johnson won the High Jump with a combined 11'8", with Letteer accounting for 6'2" of that. The same two athletes finished third in the Triple Jump.
On the boys' side, Watkins got a win from the Discus duo of Brandon Persha and Zach Pipe in a combined 206' 5 1/4"; and from the boys' coach, Travis Durfee, who won the Coaches Mile in 5:23. Trumansburg boasted two of the four meet MVPs: Lauren Nelson (Girls Track MVP) and Danny Sullivan (Boys Field MVP). Other winners were Notre Dame's Olivia Weeks (Girls Field MVP) and Newark Valley's Joe Blazey (Boys Track MVP).
