fall to Syracuse Shock, 40-6 SYRACUSE, Aug. 30 -- The Southern Tier Warriors' league record slipped to 3-5 Saturday night when they dropped a 40-6 decision to the Syracuse Shock in a North American Football League game at Henninger Field in Syracuse. The loss was the Warriors' second to the unbeaten Shock this season. They lost 27-12 in an earlier game at Odessa. The Shock used a strong running game and capitalized on several Warriors turnovers. The Warriors' only touchdown came late in the fourth quarter on a pass from Rasheed Snow to Davaun Stedge. The Warriors' next game is Sept. 11 at Jamestown against the Glove Cities Colonials. They return to Odessa-Montour High School's Charles Martin Field for their final home game of the season on Sept. 18. That game will feature a half-time performance by the Freedom Village choir.

Evolution Post 60-9 victory, lift record to 3-4
The victory on the Odessa-Montour High School football field lifted the Warriors' season mark to 3-4 heading into a road contest on Saturday night, Aug. 28 against the Syracuse Shock. Saturday's win was the Warriors' second over the Evolution this season, and both games were lopsided. The first meeting ended in a 56-0 score on July 10.
The lead went to 13-0 at 8:02 of the first quarter on a Giannone-to-Richard Payne 14-yard TD pass, and to 19-0 with 19 seconds left in the period on a 27-yard run by Jeff Rodriguez. The Warriors scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter, both by Derrick Beckworth -- on a 46-yard run that saw him go right, cut left and race up the left sideline, and on a 16-yard run. Elmira scored its only points of the first half on a 32-yard field goal.
The Evolution scored its lone touchdown a minute later on a 1-yard keeper by QB Jeff Case, but mishandled the extra-point snap. The Warriors increased their lead to 54-9 on a 12-yard pass from Giannone to Chad Worsell, and on a two-point conversion pass from Giannone to Mike Gillie. The final touchdown came with 10:09 left in the fourth quarter, on a 5-yard pass from Giannone to Worsell. blanked by Impact, 13-0
The game, on the Odessa-Montour High School football field, saw the Warriors -- in the words of Coach Bob Lee -- "keep shooting ourselves in the foot." A late interception and a fumble enabled the Impact to turn the Warriors aside on two drives and to score a late touchdown that put the game away. Two different Warriors drives stalled inside the 10-yard line in the first quarter, both times on fourth-down incompletions. The Impact scored immediately after the second of those -- on a 90-yard pass completion. Finger Lakes quarterback Jessie Higgins faked a throw left before connecting on the right sideline with Earl Hudson, who outraced Warriors defender Scot Sinsabaugh to the end zone. The point-after kick was blocked by the Warriors' Mike Merrill..
The Impact almost had another touchdown, on a 30-yard second-quarter pass play from Higgins to Alton Jones at the front left corner of the end zone. But a holding penalty nullified the play. The Warriors, 2-4 on the season, have lost twice to the Impact now after defeating them in a preseason contest. The next Warriors game comes Saturday night, at home at 7:30 p.m. against the Elmira Evolution. The Warriors defeated the Evolution on July 10 by a 56-0 score. top Albany, raise mark to 2-3 ALBANY, Aug. 8 -- The Southern Tier Warriors minor league football team got back on track Saturday night with an 18-14 non-divisional win over the Albany Metro Mallers on Bleecker Field in Albany. The Warriors, now 2-3, took an 18-0 lead in the first half before holding off the Mallers down the stretch.
They extended the lead to 12-0 on a 23-yard TD on a sweep play in which running back Davaun Stedge pitched to Richard (Bug) Payne for the score. Giannone scored on a 16-yard keeper just before halftime to increase the Warriors' advantage to 18-0 at intermission. The Mallers rallied in the second half, with one of their scores keyed by a 36-yard interception return “The Warriors played with big hearts.” said assistant coach Derick Willett. They also had big plays, including a Galan Moore 50-yard fumble return. Lee Hewitt had some big defensive plays, too, blocking a punt and notching two sacks, while Rasheed Snow knocked down two Albany passes. Coach Willett also praised his linemen for playing "old fashioned, iron-man football." The Warriors return to action at home -- on the Odessa-Montour High School football field -- at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14 against the Finger Lakes Impact in a New York Division game. Teams in that division include the Warriors, Impact, Syracuse Shock, Oswego County Outlaws and Elmira Evolution. The Warriors defeated the Impact in a pre-season game and then lost to them 27-20 during the regular season, both times on the road. The Warriors led early, 8-0, but then were unable to slow down the aerial attack of the Colonials, whose 5'9" speedy receiver, Charles Tarver, scored four touchdowns while teammate Brian Baldwin scored three. The Warriors -- in a game that saw more than a dozen personal-foul penalties and lasted more than three hours -- scored less than two minutes into the game on a Davaun Stedge 1-yard run following an interception deep in Glove Cities territory, and a 2-point conversion pass to Chavez Monteiro.
The Colonials' lead grew to 21-8 two minutes into the second quarter as Tarver scored his first touchdown, on a 15-yard pass play, and 28-8 at 2:20 on a 66-yard Kastner-to-Baldwin TD pass. The Warriors responded with a 60-yard TD pass from quarterback Danny Giannone to Stedge down the left sideline with 24.7 seconds left in the half, and a 2-point conversion pass over the middle to Rasheed Snow. But Glove Cities had an answer: a long pass to Tarver, who caught the ball wide-opened at the goal line and fell into the end zone as time expired. The halftime score was 34-16.
The Warriors scored again moments later when Byron Hall Sr. intercepted a Kastner pass and cruised to the end zone. A 2-point run was good, bringing the score to 40-30. However, the Colonials scored the next two touchdowns to pull away -- on a 70-yard kickoff return by Tarver up the right sideline, and on a short pass that Tarver turned into a 47-yard touchdown with 13:32 remaining. The Warriors' Gary Speicher scored on a fumble return with 5:05 left -- a play that saw him grab a Colonials fumble, then drop it and inadvertently kick it ahead, and then fall on it during an ensuing scramble in the end zone. The play covered 20 yards. The final touchdown came on a pass play up the middle by the Colonials as the game ended. fall to Impact, 27-20 Special to The Odessa File WATERLOO, July 18 -- The Southern Tier Warriors minor league football team sustained its first loss of the season Saturday night, falling to the Finger Lakes Impact 27-20 in a non-divisional North American Football League game at Tom Coughlin Stadium. The Warriors missed several opportunities to stop the Impact, who they had defeated 20-7 in a game early last month at the same location. The Impact, for instance, fumbled a fourth-quarter punt snap deep in its own territory but picked it up and advanced 20 yards for a first down. Minutes later, the Warriors blocked a punt near the Impact’s end zone, but the ball was retrieved by the Impact and advanced for another first down. The Warriors, down 27-12, moved to within seven points with 1½ minutes remaining on a 10-yard touchdown run by Davaun Stedge and a 2-point conversion pass to Mike Gillie. But the ensuing onside kick was covered by the Impact, who were able to run out the clock. The 1-1 Warriors will face the Syracuse Shock on Saturday, July 24 at Odessa-Montour High School's Charles Martin Field. Kickoff is at 7:30 pm. Warriors
blank Elmira, 56-0 Special to The Odessa File ODESSA, July 11 -- The Southern Tier Warriors minor league football team opened its 2010 North American Football League divisional schedule Saturday night with a 56-0 win over the Elmira Evolution at Odessa-Montour High School's Charles Martin Field. Offensively, the Warriors gained more than 300 yards, while the defense registered nine sacks and five interceptions. In other NAFL action over the weekend, the Syracuse Shock beat defending division champion Glens Falls 43-7, while the Glove Cities Colonials defeated Albany 29-8. The Warriors will face the Finger Lakes Impact this Saturday at Tom Coughlin Stadium in Waterloo -- a rematch of a June non-divisional game won by the Warriors 20-7 (see below). They then return to O-M on July 24th to face the Syracuse Shock. For more information on the team, visit www.stwarriors.org

win preseason opener
The Warriors -- not scheduled to play again until their divisional slate begins in July -- scored on a trio of 5-yard runs, one each in the first, second and third periods. Davaun Stedge scored the first TD, and the Warriors tacked on a two-point conversion on a pass from quarterback Danny Giannone to Rasheed Snow. Giannone scored the second TD late in the second period, surging through the middle of the line, but a two-point conversion pass was knocked down by an Impact defender.
The Impact got on the scoreboard on a pass to the back of the end zone with 7:14 remaining in the game, and added a point-after kick. "We played well on both sides of the ball," said Coach Bob Lee. "Our defense was outstanding. I tell you, this is a good team." The Warriors' next scheduled game is Saturday, July 10, when they host the Elmira Evolution at Odessa-Montour High School's Charles Martin Field. back in action with scrimmage
It was a Southern Tier Warriors scrimmage Saturday against the Cortland Bulldogs on the Watkins Glen High School football field. The Warriors players were upbeat as Coach Bob Lee had them run a variety of plays against the Bulldogs, and defend against various Cortland plays. The offense ran with Chavez Monteiro at quarterback at the outset, and then with last year's starter, Danny Giannone, at the helm. Some familiar faces from last year's squad were on hand, including local favorites Joe Westervelt, Josh Cole, Aaron Linton, Gary Speicher and Brett Chedzoy, along with returning assistant coaches Derick Willett and Jim Combs. All told, there were about three dozen players on hand for the Warriors, up from last year. The Warriors play in the North American Football League, whose season starts on July 10. Regular-season games are on tap through September, with playoffs in October culminating in a Championship Game in Myrtle Beach, SC on Nov. 6. The Bulldogs are members of the Northeastern Football Alliance. They normally wear black-and-red jerseys, but on Sunday -- in order to easily stand out from the black uniforms of the Warriors -- were wearing red Express jerseys, the Express being an old Syracuse team that used to be owned by the same man who owns the Bulldogs.
