WGI sets Ferrari Weekend

Special to The Odessa File

WATKINS GLEN, May 7 -- Watkins Glen International's busy summer season got a little busier with Thursday’s announcement that the FCA Art of Ferrari Challenge at WGI will now be open to fans for the first time.

The addition of the public event was announced during a joint press conference at the racetrack involving WGI and the local chapter of the Ferrari Club of America. The Art of Ferrari Challenge will be held Sept. 3-5.

“We're really looking forward to this," said WGI President Michael Printup (left). "We're embracing history with Ferrari, since it was in one of the first street races here in the village. It will undoubtedly be a huge hit with our fans.”

“We are thrilled to be able to work with WGI to make our popular weekend a spectator event so that fans of Ferrari and motorsports as a whole can see these cars in action,” said Leon Bourdage, regional director of the Ferrari Club of America. “This has the potential to be one of the biggest Ferrari events in North America this summer."

Bourdage (at right) said about 150 cars can be expected on the track that weekend, and that some display cars would likely be on hand, as well.

In either case, he said, race fans should be well served.

"These cars," he noted, "are like rolling works of art."

That weekend event will be the only one in the entire United States to feature the cars from the Ferrari Club of America and both the modern and vintage Ferraris that compete as part of the Ferrari North America Challenge Series.

Fans attending the racing events at the track can choose from several ticketing options. Tickets will be on-sale at the gate during the weekend.

--Weekend (3-day) General Admission -- $50

--Saturday and Sunday GA -- $25

--Saturday GA -- $20

--Sunday Only GA -- $15

--Kids 15 and Under -- FREE

Every ticket is essentially an all-access pass that includes all grandstands, the tailgate zones, main paddock, garage, and general viewing areas. Camping will not be available. The numerous Ferraris that race at WGI will also be put on display during the popular Art of Ferrari festival held on Market Street in Corning on Friday, Sept. 3. This year marks the 10th anniversary of that street festival.

Fans can get more information on the race weekend by going to www.TheGlen.com or on the Friday festival by visiting www.artofferrari.org. More information on the North American Ferrari Challenge can be found by going to www.ferrarichallenge.com.

Baseball essay: Out of the Mist of Lore

Ray Dandridge is in the Baseball Hall of Fame -- one of its more obscure members. Herewith a look at the man. Lore.

A childhood hero

Bubba Phillips was a journeyman major league baseball player in the 1950s and 1960s -- not normally the stuff of hero worship. But he was hero to the writer of this story -- and friend. Bubba.

A night of beauty

This is a story about an unusual -- and quite beautiful -- visit to Cooperstown in the dead of winter. It's titled "Holy Night." Holy.

A childhood tale: "Damn Yankees"

Here's a little writing exercise about a childhood sports memory -- the day the Little League team for which I pitched, the Tigers, lost to the hated Yankees. Yankees.
