Watkins golfers qualify for Sectionals
CATATONK, May 9 -- The Watkins Glen varsity golf team remained
unbeaten in Interscholastic Athletic Conference, Division 2 play and qualified
for the Section IV, Class C Tournament Thursday when it defeated Spencer-Van
Etten 220-239 on the par-36 Catatonk Golf Course.
The
Senecas, who had failed to reach the Sectional tournament in the past
few years, hit the required 40-over-par (it's 50-over for Class D teams)
by shooting 220. Par for the five-player squad was 180.
The Class C tournament will be held May 19 at the Maple
Hill Golf Club in Marathon.
Chris Hong (pictured at right in a
file photo) led the way for the Senecas with a 40, while Bruce
Wells shot 41, Ethan Roth 42, Jay Meehan 42, and Thomas Wickham 55.
Watkins returns to action with three Division 2 matches
next week: at the Catatonk course against Candor on Monday,
at the Watkins Glen Golf Course against Odessa-Montour on Wednesday, and
at the Mark Twain Golf Course against Edison on Friday -- although consideration
is being given to moving that Edison match to Tuesday.
The Wednesday match against O-M will feature presentation
of a green jacket to the day's medalist. (The presentation is for photo
purposes. The jacket, says Watkins Glen golf coach Rob Michel, belongs
to Watkins Glen softball coach Jim Scott, and will be returned to Scott's
closet.) Last year's medalist was Ben Stamp, since graduated, who won
in a five-way playoff for the honor.

The Braves were limited to five hits, while Arkport registered
15 against a pair of Bradford freshman pitchers, Dustin Cyrczak and Ryan
Keefer. Cyrczak pitched the first 3 1/3 innings, and Keefer pitched the

Chaffee
triple, George single give Senecas 5-4 victory
WATKINS
GLEN, May 8 -- A blistering bad-hop single by Kimberly George with two
out in the bottom of the 7th inning drove home the winning run Wednesday
as the Watkins Glen varsity softball team defeated Odessa-Montour 5-4
in an Interscholastic Athletic Conference, Division 2 game on theWatkins
softball field.
The winning hit, which bounced up and just over the head
of second baseman Kala Rounds, scored Taylor Chaffee, who moments before
had laced a two-out, two-strike triple to right center. As Chaffee scored,
she leaped high in celebration, and then joined teammates in surrounding
and congratulating George.
The hits came off O-M pitcher Katey Cheplick, who had taken
the mound in the second inning after starter Stephanie Letteer had encountered
control troubles. Watkins Glen built a 4-2 lead through the first two
innings. After that, the Senecas failed to score until the 7th inning.
"It was a well-played game," said Watkins Glen
Coach Jim Scott. "They (Odessa) made plays, and they made a triple
play" -- a reference to a first inning, bases loaded play in which
O-M rightfielder Katy Pound caught a fly ball and fired home. Catcher
Sherry Benedict tagged out Watkins Glen runner Kirsten Burge, and then
threw to third, where Cheplick tagged out Chaffee, who was trying to advance
from second.
O-M managed
its four runs on just three hits, three walks and three Watkins Glen errors.
O-M played errorless ball.
The Senecas had five hits. Chaffee was 2-for-3 with a triple,
a run scored and an RBI, Delaney Hodges was 2-for-3 with a double, a run
scored and an RBI, and George was 1-for-4 with the game-winning RBI.
Cheplick, Letteer and Pound had the three O-M hits -- all
of them singles.
Taylor
McCarthy went the distance on the mound for Watkins Glen, striking out
seven. Cheplick struck out four batters in her five-plus innings of pitching.
O-M scored in each of the first three innings, which put
them behind 4-3 until they pushed across the tying run in the top of the
7th. Then came the Senecas' winning rally.
Watkins Glen returns to action Friday at Edison. O-M plays
the same day at Tioga.

Glen baseball team defeats O-M,
12-5
WATKINS
GLEN, May 8 -- The Watkins Glen varsity baseball team pulled away from
Odessa-Montour with a 6-run 4th inning Wednesday enroute to a 12-5 Interscholastic
Athletic Conference, Division 2 victory on the Watkins baseball field.
The win lifted the Senecas' season mark to 7-8, and their
division record to 5-4 heading into a contest Friday at Edison. O-M dropped
to 1-12, 0-9.
"It was ugly, ugly," said Watkins Glen Coach Ben
Connelly, referring to the game's 14 errors -- seven by each team.
But errors aside, Watkins outpitched the Indians, allowing
just four O-M safeties while registering nine hits.
The
Watkins hits came from Shane Absalom (2-for-2 with two runs scored), Zach
Landon (1-for-1 with a triple and an RBI), Lee Bauman (1-for-4 with a
run), Brandon Kottwitz (2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored),
Josh Paradiso (1-for-3), Jeremy Munroe (1-for-4), and Ryan Frisk (1-for-2).
In addition, Joe Stansfield had an RBI on a bases loaded grounder, and
Paul Flahive had 2 RBIs on a pair of sacrifice fly balls.
O-M's hits were registered by T.T. Shisler (1-for-3 with
an RBI), Ryan Muller (1-for-3 with two runs scored), Steve Benjamin (1-for-3
with an RBI), and John Blaha (1-for-3 with a double and an RBI).
Watkins Glen recorded double plays in each of the first
three innings, and pulled off a 5th inning triple play in which O-M's
Shisler tried a suicide squeeze with runners on second and third and popped
the ball up in front of the plate. The Watkins catcher, Kottwitz, caught
it in the air and fired to third baseman Mack Secord, who doubled off
the O-M lead runner. Secord's throw to second baseman Absalom caught the
O-M runner there off base as well. That was the Senecas' first triple
play of the season.
O-M
had the early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the 1st inning and
one in the 2nd for a 3-2 advantage. Watkins Glen tied the score in the
3rd, and then pushed across six runs in the 4th and three more in the
6th. Odessa added single runs in the 5th and 7th innings.
Landon started on the mound for Watkins Glen, but left the
game with a hamstring injury after recording one out in the 2nd inning.
He was relieved by Paradiso, who pitched through the 6th inning. Stansfield
pitched the 7th inning. Tom Dykshoorn went the distance for O-M.

Notre Dame registered seven hits, and was aided by four
Trumansburg errors. But T-burg notched 10 hits as it pulled away for the

T-burg softball team falls to ND, 11-4
TRUMANSBURG, May 8 -- The Trumansburg varsity softball team suffered
its third loss in four games Wednesday, dropping an 11-4 decision to Elmira
Notre Dame in an Interscholastic Athletic Conference, Division 1 contest
on the T-burg softball field.
The defeat lowered the Blue Raiders' season mark to 10-5, and their division
record to 5-4.
Notre Dame jumped out in front fast, scoring four runs in the 1st inning
on four singles and a Trumansburg error, but Trumansburg rallied with
four 2nd inning runs to tie the game. That rally was keyed by a bases
loaded throwing error that allowed three runs to score. Kayla Hardesty
added an RBI single.
But Notre Dame went in front for good in the 3rd inning with a lead-off
homer and a couple more runs set up by three walks off Trumansburg pitcher
Kaitlyn Percey. One of those came home on a squeeze bunt, and the other
on an attempted throw-out at 2nd base.
The Crusaders added four more runs in the 5th on three doubles and a triple.

qualified for Class D Sectionals Wednesday when it defeated Candor 228-252
in an Interscholastic Athletic Conference, Division 2 match on the par-36
front-9 at the Catatonk Golf Course.
"Our score qualifies us for the Class D sectionals on May 20th at
Delhi College," said O-M Coach Greg Gavich, "which is a good
accomplishment for us -- our 8th straight year. We needed 230 or better.
I'm very proud of the guys for their effort and improvement this season."
The 230 cutoff was 50 over par -- a score his team needed
to equal or better on a course other than its home course (the Watkins
Glen Golf Course).
Todd Kautz led the way with a career-low 38 (1-under par after 6 holes),
while Craig Brown fired a 41, Matt Kautz 45, Brian Stamp 50 (his season-low),

Track: Watkins boys, girls top Candor
The
Watkins Glen boys and girls track teams visited Candor Tuesday for an
Interscholastic Athletic Conference dual meet -- a tuneup to Friday's
Twisted Classic Relays at Watkins Glen. Boys Coach Travis Durfee reports
first on his team's victory, and then Marie Fitzsimmons reports on how
the girls fared.
Dear Charlie,
The Watkins Glen boys track team moved to 3-0 in division play this season
with a 96-45 victory over Candor on Tuesday, May 6. The meet was hosted
in Candor, where Watkins competitors set a number of stadium records.
Senior Brandon Persha (pictured at right)
continued his excellent throwing season by setting the Candor stadium
record for Discus with a throw of 135' 11”. Persha threw 39' 7 1/2”
in the Shot Put, where he also took first place. Junior Zach Pipe notched
a second-place finish in the Shot Put (32' 1/2”) and third in the
Discus (80' 9”).
Junior
Cody Dahl also set a new Candor record in the 100 Meter Dash (11.4). In
addition to securing a first-place finish in the 200 meter (23.7), Dahl
also anchored the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams. Dahl was joined
on the 4x100 team by his brother, senior Erik Dahl, sophomore Eric Mack
and senior Khaya Makhubu. The Senecas' 4x400 Meter Relay team was rounded
out by junior Steven Vedder, Mack and freshman Andrew Conklin.
The Senecas' distance team continued its dominance Tuesday night. Senior
Ben Quigley anchored and saved a 4x800 Relay that was plagued by uncharacteristically
weak early legs. The team, which also consisted of freshman Travis Waite,
junior Jared Lewis and senior Jon Fazzary (pictured
at right), took first place. Quigley also took second
place in the 1600 Meters (5:07), a race won by teammate Fazzary (4:55.4).
Fazzary also took first in the 3200 (10:12).
The Senecas host 13 teams for the Twisted Classic Relays this Friday.
The meet contains a number of mixed-up relays and races that almost guarantee
a good time. All are welcome and encouraged to attend! The team travels
to Odessa-Montour next Tuesday for its final division meet of the season,
a tri-meet with Odessa-Montour and Tioga. With a strong showing, the Senecas
can secure a division title and, possibly, an undefeated season.
Goodspeed,
Coach Durfee
-----------------------
Hi
Charlie,
The girls' track team travelled to Candor Tuesday and won 110-31. Under
sunny skies and a light breeze, the Lady Senecas dominated both on the
track and in the field. Taking first in every event but the Shot Put and
the 800 Meters, the team set the tone early and never faltered.
In the field:
Sarah Teed had a terrific night with a first place in the Discus and
a personal record of 78' 3/8 ". Teammates Rachel Baccile and Sarah
Mahler completed the sweep for the Lady Throwers. Jaclyn Conklin took
second in Shot Put at 27' 8 1/2" (Candor's thrower set a school record
for first) while Sarah Mahler placed 3rd at 25' 3 1/4".
Alexa Yaskulski took first in both the
Triple Jump (29') and Long Jump (14'3"), while Shelby Olafson claimed
yet another first in the High Jump at 5'2". Jaimie Sedlack placed
second with 4'8" (nice!). Andrea Witiaz took first in the Pole Vault
at 7' while Andrea Bellavigna took second at 6'. Quite a night for our
jumpers!
In the world of distance:
Teammates
Sophie Peters, Somer Pettet (pictured at
right), Jaclyn Conklin and Jaimie Sedlack ran a strong
4x800 and opened the night with the first victory. Peters did an exceptional
job with wins in the 1500 (5:28) and the 3000 (12:15). Sunnie Smith took
3rd in the 3000 with a strong performance. Somer Pettet took first in
the 400 Meters (68.1) and 2nd in the 800 (2:51). (Candor's Katie Ahart
took first.) Conklin (1:18.7), Peters (122.1) and Bellavigna (1:25) swept
the 400 Hurdles.(Conklin and Peters are prepping for a Twisted Classic
event with Man Track, and Peters can always use a hurdle run for steeplechase
readiness!)
Andrea Witiaz took a first in the 200 (30.1) and was on the winning 4x100
with Stephanie Robbins, Shelby Olafson (pictured
at right) and Hasniyah Larayos. When taking to the track
for the final event of the night, Witiaz implored her team for a perfect
night, and the other 4x400 athletes -- Conklin, Larayos and Sedlack --
helped her make it so in a time of 4:49. A lovely end to the evening!
Special kudos to Laura Flood and Cheyenne Edgett for terrific hurdling
and to Tina Locke for a great 400!
We hope to see everyone at the Twisted Classic Friday at 4:30! Thirteen
schools will be competing for the coveted Twisted Trophy, and it should
be a great evening!
Cheers,
Coach Fitz

Trumansburg boys fall short at Dryden
The Trumansburg track team traveled to Dryden on Tuesday, May 6,
for a dual meet. Boys track coach Neil DeRaiche reports on how his squad
did.
The Trumansburg boys track team came up a little short during Tuesday's
dual meet against Dryden, losing 80-61. There were two seniors who did
have very good nights: Danny Sullivan and Erik Bagdonavicius.
Danny won the High Jump with a 6’ jump. He also won the Discus
with a throw of 111’1” and placed second in the 200 Meter
and 100 Meter races. Erik placed first in the 800 Meters with a time of
2:12.5 and he was the anchor on the 3200 Relay that won. He also placed
third in the Pole Vault. The members of the winning 3200 relay were Willy
Seegers, Matt Hallman, and Cody Scott.
We knew going into the meet that it was going to be an extremely tough
one, and it was. Dryden was able to take two out of three relays, which
was the deciding factor, but our guys ran well and we again had many personal
records -- and we continue to get stronger and faster.

CANDOR, May 6 -- The Watkins Glen varsity softball team,
missing a chance to score with the bases loaded in the 7th inning, dropped

Division 2 game on the Candor softball field.
The loss leaves the Senecas with a 3-7 overall record and
a 3-5 division mark heading into a contest Wednesday at home against intracounty
rival Odessa-Montour.
Watkins Glen took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning, but Candor
tied it in the 4th and pulled ahead with a two-run 5th inning. The Senecas
responded with two runs in the top of the 6th to tie the game 3-3, but
Candor scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 6th.
The Senecas put two runners on with one out in the 7th,
and had the bases loaded with two outs, but a fly out ended the threat
and the game.

Glen, yielding seven hits while walking three batters and striking out

NEWARK VALLEY, May 6 -- The Trumansburg varsity softball
team fell to Newark Valley 4-2 Monday in an Interscholastic Athletic Conference,
Division 1 game when the Cardinals broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run 6th
inning rally.
The loss dropped Trumansburg's overall record to 10-4, and
its division record to 5-3.
Newark Valley had the early lead after scoring single runs
in both the first and second innings -- the first on an error and the
second on an RBI single, both with two outs.
Trumansburg got on the board in the fourth when Kaitlyn
Percey tripled and scored on a disputed tag play involving Kelly Meskill
at first base. Meskill then stole second and was driven home by a Kayla
Hardesty single that tied the score.
Trumansburg subsequently turned back a Newark Valley threat
when a Meskill throw to home from the outfield cut down a Cardinal runner
trying to score from third on a potential sacrifice fly. But Newark Valley
broke through with the go-ahead run in the sixth on an error, a stolen
base, a passed ball and a mishandled bunt, and then added an insurance
run on another passed ball..
Trumansburg will be home on Wednesday against Elmira Notre Dame at 4:30.p.m.

Watkins baseball team holds off S-VE
SPENCER,
May 3 -- The Watkins Glen varsity baseball team withstood a late Spencer-Van
Etten rally Friday to post a 4-3 Interscholastic Athletic Conference,
Division 2 road victory.
The win lifted the Senecas' season mark to 5-8, and their
division record to 3-4 heading into a contest Monday at Candor.
Josh Paradiso -- who pitched 5 1/3 innings after relieving
in the second inning when starter Mark Fraboni was moved to second base
following the onset of an arm problem -- posted the victory, giving him
a 2-0 season record. Zach Landon pitched the final 2/3 of an inning to
earn the save.
Watkins Glen, up 4-1 after 5 1/2 innings, allowed S-VE to
close to within a run as the Panthers scored once in the 6th inning and
again in the 7th. That final inning was punctuated by what Coach Ben Connelly
called "an incredible catch" by Watkins rightfielder Ivan Malina
in which he caught an S-VE fly ball in foul territory by diving for it
"laid out and falling down." That marked the first out in the
bottom of the 7th.
After
that, Spencer scored a run on a ground-rule double and RBI single, which
brought Landon on in relief. The runner on first was picked off base by
Watkins catcher Lee Bauman, and then -- after another S-VE base hit --
Landon got the final out on a grounder to second to secure the victory.
Watkins Glen registered seven hits in the game -- by seven
different players. They came from Landon (1-for-3 with a double), Bauman
(1-for-3 with a triple and 2 RBIs), Fraboni (1-for-2 with a double), Paradiso
(1-for-3), Malina (1-for-3 with a double), Ryan Frisk (1-for-2), and Ian
Remmers (1-for-1).

WATKINS
GLEN, May 1 -- The Watkins Glen varsity softball team played a tough Tioga
team even for six innings Wednesday before bowing 6-3 on a 7th inning
homer in an Interscholastic Athletic Conference, Division 2 game on the
Watkins softball field.
The loss dropped the Senecas' overall mark to 3-4, and their
Division 2 record to 3-2. Tioga is unbeaten in division play.
Taylor McCarthy went the distance on the mound for Watkins,
allowing nine hits while striking out nine batters and walking two. Three
of the Tioga runs were unearned as Watkins committed five errors. Sarah
Wayson got the pitching win for Tioga, going the distance while allowing
six hits, striking out seven and walking one.
The
Watkins Glen hits came from six different players: Ariel Force (1-for-4),
Kirsten Burge (1-for-4 with a double), Taylor Chaffee (1-for-3 with 2
RBIs), Jessie Smith (1-for-3 with a double), Kimberly George (1-for-3
with an RBI), and Molly Bilinski (1-for-2 with a walk).
The 7th inning opened with McCarthy striking out the leadoff
hitter, but a bad hop single, an error by McCarthy and a line-drive homer
to the gap in right center gave Tioga the runs it needed.
"I'm just so proud of them," Watkins Glen Coach
Jim Scott said of his players. "We're playing better and better.
We just have to cut down on the errors."
The Senecas are back in action this afternoon (Thursday),
at home against Edison.

for an Interscholastic Athletic Conference battle with the Bobcats. Boys
coach Neil DeRaiche reports here on the outcome for his Blue Raiders boys
team.
The Trumansburg boys had a great night to beat Lansing on

until the Raiders took control to win 77-64. Sweeping the High Jump and
Triple Jump sealed the deal.

Watkins baseball team bows to Tioga
WATKINS
GLEN, May 1 -- The Watkins Glen varsity baseball team had one bad inning,
and that -- along with some shoddy baserunning -- led to a 6-3 defeat
Wednesday at the hands of Tioga in an Interscholastic Athletic Conference,
Division 2 game on the Watkins baseball field.
The loss dropped the Senecas' season record to 4-7, and
their Division 2 mark to 2-3 heading into a game today (Thursday) at home
against Edison.
Brandon Kottwitz started on the mound for Watkins, going
4 innings-plus. He allowed all six Tioga runs (five earned) on eight hits
while striking out six batters and walking two. Mark Fraboni relieved
during the Tioga 5th inning uprising, going the final three innings and
allowing no runs on three hits while striking out two and walking two.
The Senecas had seven hits. They came from Shane Absalom
(2-for-3 with a triple), Kottwitz (3-for-4), and Josh Paradiso (2-for-3
with a double). Zach Landon and Fraboni had no hits, but were each credited
with an RBI.
"Only
three guys on the team had hits," said Watkins Glen Coach Ben Connelly.
"That's not good. And we were terrible on the basepaths" --
a situation that included one Watkins runner thrown out stealing without
the steal sign, one runner doubled off first base on a line drive with
the bases loaded and one out, one runner called out for tagging early
on a fly ball, and one runner not tagging when he could have advanced
on a fly ball.
Watkins Glen had a 2-1 lead through four innings before
Tioga scored its five 5th inning runs on a double, a single, a hit batsman,
an error on a routine double play ball that allowed one run in, a 3-run
double, and a sacrifice fly. The Senecas got one final run in the 7th
inning.

The
Watkins Glen boys and girls varsity track teams held their final home
dual meet of the season Tuesday, honoring their seniors before the start
of competition. The Watkins girls then defeated Edison 78-63, while the
boys edged the Spartans 71-70. Both Watkins Glen coaches, Marie Fitzsimmons
and Travis Durfee, filed reports. Marie's is first:
Dear Charlie,
The Lady Senecas put forth a terrific effort against TAE
and won a hard-fought competition. Led by two individual wins and a relay
win by senior Sophie Peters (800 and 1500), junior Alexa Yaskulski (200
and 100 Hurdles), and sophomore Somer Pettet (400 and 3000), the Watkins
Track Team did the school proud. Both Peters (1500) and Pettet (3000)
were able to pull out the win against TAE's very talented Sarah Palmer
in dynamic races.
Huge kudos go to the throwers -- Rachel Baccile, Sarah Mahler,
Jaclyn Conklin, and Sarah Teed -- for a sweep in Discus and a one-two
in Shot. Andrea Witiaz vaulted to 1st place, while Shelby Olafson wowed
the crowd by going 5'2" yet again, after breaking the school record
with that height at the TAE invitationals on Saturday.
Congratulations
to the entire team for a competitive spirit, excellent sportsmanship,
and a satisfying win! Kudos to Man Track for a spectacular, knuckle biting,
thrill-making, breath-taking win! And here's to Shannon Hazlitt, distance
girl supreme; Tina Locke for a fine 400, Cheyenne Edgett for excellent
hurdling in the toughest event, and Sarah Teed for a PR in the 400! Well
done!
To my seniors -- Sunnie, Andrea, Sarah, Courtney, Megan,
Jaclyn, and Sophie -- I am honored by your hard work, commitment, generosity,
and athleticism.
Proudly,
Coach Fitz
