Shaw wins Susan Award

WATKINS GLEN, June 3 -- Watkins Glen High School freshman Devon Shaw was presented the sixth annual Susan B. Haeffner Schuyler County Sportsmanship Award Wednesday night during the Top Drawer 24 party at the Watkins Glen State Park Pavilion.

Shaw, who is facing leg surgery next week to combat cancer, was given the award by his longtime youth soccer coach, Mark Stephany, following brief remarks by Stephany at the podium.

He gave Shaw a big hug afterward.

The award is named in honor of the late wife of Odessa File editor/publisher Charlie Haeffner. She passed away on Nov. 1, 2004. It is given each year to one high school student-athlete in the county. Previous winners were Odessa-Montour's Sally Wilcox and John Blaha, and Watkins Glen's Courtney Warren, Sophie Peters and Ian Remmers.

Chaffee, Stephens, Melanson win Athlete of Year Awards

WATKINS GLEN, June 3 -- Three high school athletes who had remarkable years were named Wednesday night as winners of the annual Odessa File Athlete of the Year Awards.

Watkins Glen sophomore Taylor Chaffee was presented a plaque in honor of her three-sport, All-Star year in swimming, basketball and softball.

Odessa-Montour High School had co-Athletes of the Year: senior Dan Stephens (soccer, basketball and tennis) and junior Michelle Melanson (soccer, basketball and track).

The winners were determined by a season-long points race compiled by The Odessa File. An athlete was given three points each time he or she was named Athlete of the Week, two points for a Double Honorable Mention, and one point for an Honorable Mention.
