A competitor approaches the finish line in front of a pier full of spectators. More Cardboard
Boat Regatta photos WATKINS GLEN, June 20 -- Thousands of spectators, scores of cardboard boats, plenty of food, sunny skies, rain, and camaraderie: the 17th Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta at the Seneca Harbor Marina had it all Saturday. Here are some more photos of the day. For a story and other photos, see Features. The Hazlitt White Cat craft lurches left, almost throwing a competitor or two overboard. Chef William Cornelius was working hard at a food booth. The craft titled Donnie's Maiden Voyage was entered by the Brubaker family in honor of Donald G. Brubaker, who died October 30th . It's the same craft he built for last year's Regatta, since refurbished after being kept in storage. A picture of Brubaker was carried aloft, and the flag aft said "Fair Winds & Following Seas." From left: Spectator Cassie Wait; Assemblyman (and State Senate candidate) James Bacalles; David Smith of Painted Post, who called himself Captain Underpants. The SS Schuyler I, captained by Tim O'Hearn, paddles along after finishing the race. A crew deliberately capsizes after completing the race. Two vessels reacher the finish line between two pilings almost at the same time. The Sitel Vision Passion Purpose crossed first, ahead of the Redneck Yaught Club. The Lake Country Players' sturdy Penzance LCP makes its way toward the finish line. Boats race away from the starting ramp toward the breakwater, where they'd turn left. Among those on hand were, from left, Hannah Capozzi, Seimei Sanga and Sam Capozzi. Left: The SS Devon, with honorary Captain Devon Shaw, who was hospitalized in Rochester for chemotherapy. Right: Boaters berthed in the marina took pictures of themselves and of the passing cardboard vessels. Not every craft stayed afloat. The Wireless World boat was tilting, but still afloat at the end. Here and Beyond had smooth sailing.
