Runners take off Sunday at the start of the Live Like Liz 5K Run.

Live Like Liz 5K: A great cause, and a repeat winner

WATKINS GLEN, June 6 -- For the second straight year, the clouds parted and the sun came out at the outset Sunday of the Live Like Liz 5K Walk/Run on the Watkins Glen High School track and the Catharine Valley Trail.

And for the second straight year, Cody Scott, a senior track standout at Trumansburg High School, won the overall title, finishing in 17:50. His time last year -- on a day much hotter than this one -- was 18:25.

The women's winner Sunday was Nikki Deiseroth, who finished in 19:55. The Masters Division winners were Russell Derick (17:57) and Marie Fitzsimmons (23:34).

A total of 271 runners finished the 6th annual race, and more than 200 walkers. The amount of money raised through pledges was not immediately available. It goes to the fight against ovarian cancer, which claimed the life of Liz Amisano on Oct. 12, 2005 -- prompting this ongoing movement to spread the word, the awareness, about the disease.

In a ceremony in the WGHS Field House gym before the race, Liz's sister Margie gave a keynote speech, while cancer survivor Carol Sutherland shared that "my energy is most definitely back. I see a doctor twice a year, but I'm saying goodbye to those nasty side effects forever."

Katie Gingrich, a cancer survivor who has spoken at this event in the past, shared a poem she had written. Gingrich, who said she "never knew Liz, but I feel like I did," read her poem as follows:

Death is Nothing.
It does not count.
I have only slipped away into the next Room.
Everything Remains as it was.
The old life that we lived so fondly
together is unchanged and untouched.
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.
Call me by the old familiar name.
Speak of me in the easy way
which you always used.
Put no sorrow in your tone.
Laugh as we always laughed, at the little jokes that we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household
word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effort.
Life means all that it ever meant.
There is unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind
because I am out of sight?
I am waiting for you, for an
interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner.
All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost.
One brief moment and all will be
as it was before.
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again.

One of the event organizers, Marie Fitzsimmons (pictured at right) -- who provided some play-by-play of the race over the microphone after finishing first in the Women's Masters Division -- relayed the following by email:

"It was a great turnout!

"The Live Like Liz Committee with Mary Ellen Fraboni as president have been a sensation! Their attention to detail is exquisite and the prizes they put together for the runners are truly impressive. So generous, so thoughtful! For runners to be able to choose from a prize table is quite something -- Corning Glass, overnights at hotels, dinners at so many area restaraunts. Wow! The community has been so kind to donate so many beautiful gifts and experiences!

"A giant thanks to Coach Joe Reynolds from the Finger Lakes Running Club (who was on hand to help oversee the race). Coach Joe and I just loved coaching Liz back in her high school days, and it is so poignant to have his assistance and expertise. Coach Joe sets up the finish line, ropes off the course, brings over the timer and handles so much of the race logistics.

"And the Watkins Glen High School track team did a great job with the water stops, with so many of the athletes either running or helping!"
