Obituaries

Ada Hall

Age 99, passed away peacefully at Good Shepherd Village in Endwell on January 28, 2012.

She was born September 5, 1912 to Frank and Sarah Dorsey in Montour Falls, NY and graduated high school from Cook Academy. She was a resident of Montour Falls until August 2008, when she moved to Woodland Manor Assisted Living in Vestal, NY. After a brief illness in July 2010, she was moved to Good Shepherd Village skilled nursing facility in Endwell, NY.

She was the widow of PFC Gordon Tillis, who was killed in action in Germany in December 1944 during WWII. In 1967, she married her second husband, George Hall, a WWII veteran, local jeweler and watchmaker who predeceased her in 1989. Ada was employed for 30 years as the Medical Records Librarian at Schuyler Hospital in Montour Falls and then as sales clerk and bookkeeper at Hall’s Jewelry.

Ada had great pride in her town of Montour Falls. She acted, unofficially, as “ambassador” for the town and the Falls. She also was a self-appointed “information center,” passing out brochures at the Falls, or in her front yard, to the many tourists from all over the world. The town mayor received more than one letter from visitors commending Ada for her “warm welcome” to Montour Falls!

Ada walked “downtown” at least twice a day as long as she was physically able, visiting with friends and employees at the pharmacy, bank and post office and sharing with both locals and out-of-towners her sense of humor, positive and witty personality and pride in her town.

Ada will be remembered by her sons’ generation as an involved and active parent; acting as a Cub Scout den mother, providing a ride to or from a school event and always making her home a “home away from home” for all her sons’ friends and acquaintances. She will be remembered by her peers as a sincere friend, as well as being active in the American Legion Auxiliary, widows’ lunch group, being a bell ringer for the Salvation Army at Christmas time, going to the Veteran’s Hospital to help the vets pick out and wrap Christmas gifts for their families and for her many “Ventures” bus trips.

Ada was also a member of the Montour Falls United Methodist Church. In earlier years, she enjoyed cooking and crocheting or knitting; especially sweaters, hats, mittens, etc. for her two sons, and later adding skirts, poncho sets and doll clothes for her six granddaughters. In later years, she became a “photo bug” and appreciated flowers, birds, clouds, her smoke tree and visits with Falls’ tourists, all from her front porch rocker.

Ada is survived by two loving sons: Rollin (Pat) Tillis, Philadelphia, PA and Stewart (Marion) Tillis, Vestal, NY. She is also survived by six granddaughters and their husbands: Coleen (Jerry) Zabinski, Lori (Ron) Spicer, Kim (Bob) Santoni, Kelly (David) Schecter, Maria (Eric) Connor, and Kristy (Marty) Eckenrode as well as thirteen great-grandchildren. Ada will be greatly missed, as she was truly ONE OF A KIND!

The family will receive friends at the Vedder and Scott, Inc. Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee Street, Montour Falls, NY on Saturday, February 4 from 1 PM until time of the funeral service at 2 PM. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. To share a memory, “Light a Candle” or send the family a condolence, please visit www.vedderandscottfuneralhome.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ada’s memory to the Montour Falls Methodist Church, 124 Owego Street, Montour Falls, NY 14865; The Schuyler County Historical Society, PO Box 651, Montour Falls, NY 14865 or the charity of one’s choice.

Jean B. Lawton

Age 86, a retired teacher, passed peacefully with family by her side on Friday, February 25, 2011 at Seneca View Skilled Nursing Facility, Montour Falls, New York.

Born on August 4, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Harold Whiting and Enid Holden Burnside of Chevy Chase, MD and the sister of the late James Bradford and Bruce Holden Burnside.

She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, John Stephen Lawton; son Stephen Jeffery Lawton and daughter Linda Greene (Ross), and Julie Anne Lawton (Dr. Jennifer Thomson).

Additionally, she is survived by several nieces and nephews and their spouses / partners, Chris Burnside (Karl Green), Diane Burnside Murdock (Steve), Malcomb Burnside (Robyn), Jamie Burnside (Marianne), Theresa Clapp-Burnside (Mitchell), Lora Burnside, G. Frederic Hall, Dale Hall Vetuskey (Jim), and Jacqueline Hall Barton (Wayne), and many grand nieces and nephews, second cousins and their families.

Jean was an honors graduate of the University of Maryland at College Park, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in education as well as her membership in the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society in April 1946. She was also an active member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority.

On August 17, 1946 she married John S. Lawton and shared a full, vibrant life with her husband, children, family and friends.

Jean received her Master of Science degree from Elmira College, Elmira, New York in 1964. She also attended Cortland State University (NY) and Ithaca College (NY), where she received her 90-hour certificate in continued education, the pinnacle for her profession at that time.

She began her teaching career in 1950 and taught varying grade levels of K-12 for 36 years until her retirement in 1986. During those years, she was the first winning coach for the Watkins Glen High School girls' basketball team in 1972 with an undefeated season of 6-0. She was also a coordinator for the three-county area Special Olympics, where her athletes won 19 gold, 10 silver, and 10 bronze medals. Additionally, she coached two champion participants who qualified for and competed in the National Special Olympics at UCLA in Los Angeles, CA in 1972.

In 1985, Jean received a special dedication in the first edition of the XGES Times, from the members of the fourth grade at Watkins Glen Elementary School, paying “Special Tribute to a Special Teacher.”

“She taught us a lot more of the meaning of equality, goodness and sportsmanship," it read. "She believes in rewarding the competitor for trying. She is always there with a cheerful smile and high spirits to help us make it through the day. She had always been a shining example for us to follow. Her office walls are filled with warm symbols of happy times. As you walk past her, it’s not uncommon for her to stop and tell a joke. The time with her taught us something we will take with us and merely one, small unit compared to all of the hours, days and years she put into our school. This dedication is a thank you to her for her contributions and fun she shared.” She truly loved teaching, and her students, and it showed.

In 1994, Jean was inducted into the Watkins Glen High School Hall of Fame for her career achievements. An avid athlete, she thoroughly enjoyed tennis -- winning numerous trophies at local tournaments. She also loved swimming and especially walking, everywhere, but thrived on walking the beach. Other favorite activities included reading, listening to music, watching musicals, people watching, socializing and maintaining correspondence with friends and family. There was never an event or holiday untouched by a note, a card or a call from Mom!

She always loved traveling and enjoyed yearly trips to Virginia Beach, VA -- her “Home Away from Home” -- as well as numerous other locations. In her later years, she relished her senior citizen trips to various destinations, enjoying musical concerts, plays, botanical gardens, Boldt Castle, and many sightseeing tours. As well, she enjoyed relaxing at our lake cabin with family and friends and also swimming in the State Park pool and walking through the Glen and camping area trails.

We will always love and cherish the memories of our Dear Sweet “Mom”! She and her wonderfully warm disposition and special brand of wit and humor will be truly missed, but as she always said…”Remember to Smile and Keep on Keepin On.”

There will be a private memorial observed by the family. Our very special thanks go to Esther Heichel, Nurse Manager, and her superb team and staff at the Seneca View Skilled Nursing Facility. Their professionalism and gracious treatment is a testament to their skill, talent and compassion. For that, we are tremendously grateful. Our History

Earl M. Vedder established the Vedder Funeral Home in 1926, and Wendell V. Scott established the Scott Funeral Home in 1948, both in Montour Falls, NY. Mr. Vedder also owned a local furniture store on Main Street. A local businessman and friend to both men, John E. Hodge, encouraged them to join their businesses to make a stronger commitment to the community. So in 1949 Vedder and Scott, Inc., was established as a Funeral Home on North Genesee Street and as a Furniture Store on the Main Street of Montour Falls, in the heart of the Finger Lakes Region. The Heal Funeral Home, on Church Street in Odessa, was purchased by the Company in 1981 and provided a second location to our unique communities.

Earl and Blanche Vedder resided in the North Genesee Street Funeral Home apartment. Blanche was a school teacher at the Montour Elementary School, and was the Village Clerk for a time. They owned a small farm on Rt. 414 where Earl enjoyed horseback riding and raising horses. They retired to Mesa, AZ in the early 1960s.

Wendell and Dorothy Scott lived on Owego Street in Montour Falls in the former Hibbard Funeral Home, where they raised five children, until moving into the North Genesee Street apartment when the Vedders retired. Dorothy worked as an accountant for the Montour National Bank and in the furniture store in following years. Wendell was the Town Clerk in Montour Falls for approximately 20 years, and was well known as a resident at Chef’s Diner for breakfast!

The Montour Falls location was built in 1844. Before becoming the Funeral Home, some of the upstairs rooms were rented for local nurses who worked at the Shepherd’s Hospital out behind the Funeral Home on Schuyler Street. The building still has the original Dutch Oven and Fireplace and is included as part of the section known as the “Glorious T” of historic buildings in Montour Falls.
