On the Book Front:
The Peterson Library: An Odessa community hub

The following column was written by Karin Thomas, Director of the Dutton S. Peterson Memorial Library, 106 First St. in Odessa.
Hello! My name is Karin Thomas, and I serve as the Director of the Dutton S. Peterson Memorial Library in Odessa, NY. I hold a BA in English Literature from the University of North Alabama and bring 12 years of public library experience to my role. Together with my colleague, Stacey Hetzel, and a dedicated team of volunteers, we strive to create a welcoming, safe space where everyone in our community feels valued and supported.
Our mission reflects this commitment: “The Dutton S. Peterson Memorial Library is a community institution that provides inclusive, accessible services to support lifelong learning and fulfillment. As a storehouse of knowledge, our library encourages informed citizenship and provides diverse educational, recreational, and cultural resources.”
Each month, we offer a variety of recurring programs, including Children’s Story Time every Tuesday, bi-monthly book clubs, and a seasonal book barn for donations and sales. We also host special programs for children, teens, adults, and families throughout the year. These events often fill up quickly due to limited space and materials -- so be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram to stay updated on upcoming activities. Keep an eye out for our newly redesigned website as well, which will soon feature the latest information on board meetings, policies, and our monthly calendar.
In recent years, the library has undergone several exciting updates. We've added a reading garden on the north side of the building and a wheelchair-accessible entrance on the south side. Soon, we’ll be unveiling a vibrant new mural installation near the patio. Designed by local artists Cynthia Cratsley and Jennifer Thomas, the mural will serve as both a visual celebration of literature and the natural beauty of Odessa, while also acting as a sound barrier for the reading garden.
We're here to serve you! Whether you're searching for your next great read or a movie to enjoy, or need printing or faxing services, an on-site notary, or simply a quiet place to relax, the Dutton S. Peterson Library is your community hub.
Thanks to the generosity of The Odessa File, we'll be sharing regular updates right on this page -- featuring new book arrivals, upcoming programs, exciting projects and grants, and all the latest library news.
Stop by and discover all that we have to offer. We're always happy to help!
